Depression

Depression is a disabling condition which adversely affects a person’s family, work or school life, sleeping and eating habits and general health. To sum up, you feel dreadful and facing life on a day to day basis becomes more and more difficult.

This ‘disorder’ varies widely, from one episode lasting a week to a lifelong issue with recurrent depressive episodes. Let’s be clear about what depression is.

According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV), the criteria for a major depression episode is 5 or more of the following symptoms (which must include 1) or 2)) during the same 2 week period, which represent a change from previous functioning.

SYMPTOMS

  1. depressed mood most of the day
  2. markedly diminished interest or pleasure
  3. significant weight loss or addiction
  4. insomnia or hypersomnia
  5. panic attacks, IBS, migraine, incontinence, etc
  6. fatigue or loss of energy
  7. feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt
  8. diminished ability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness
  9. recurrent thoughts of death

The causes of depression are explained in various ways; from complicated descriptions of neurons and neurotransmitters in the brain through to the findings in certain research, such as:-
“An examination of depression in women indicates that vulnerability factors, including early maternal loss, lack of a confiding relationship, responsibility for the care of several young children at home or unemployment, can interact with life stressors to increase the risk of depression. For older adults the factors are often health problems, change in relationships with a spouse or adult children, death of a significant other.”

Children can often be irritable rather than showing a depressed mood and show other symptoms depending on age and situation. Most exhibit a loss of interest in school and a decline in academic performance They may also be clingy, demanding, dependant or insecure.
